Tired of wearing glasses or contacts? Today, several surgical

methods can correct your eyesight and give you the freedom of

seeing well without corrective lenses. By far LASIK is currently

the most popular refractive (vision-correcting) surgery available.

More than one million LASIK procedures are performed in the

United States each year.
Am I a good candidate for LASIK? To be a good candidate for

refractive surgery you should be at least 18 years old, have stable

vision correction, healthy eyes, and adequate corneal thickness.

Chronic dry eye problems, corneal diseases, or other abnormalities

may disqualify you. In order to know for sure, a comprehensive

eye exam is required. This exam with a LASIK consult is usually

provided at no cost.
The LASIK procedure is an ambulatory procedure. You walk in

the surgery center, have the procedure done, and walk out again.

The actual surgery usually takes less than 10 minutes for both eyes,

but expect to be at the surgery center for an hour or more.
LASIK is a two-step procedure. In the first step, the surgeon

creates a thin, hinged flap of tissue on the cornea with a laser. This

flap is folded back so the laser can, in the second step, reshape the

corneal tissue. After that the flap is repositioned and the procedure

is complete.

After Surgery the surgeon will

apply medicated eye drops and a

clear protective shield over your

eyes. You can open your eyes and

you will be seeing well enough, but

you must have someone else drive

you home.
You will be expected to use the

medicated eye drops several times

a day for 1-2 weeks to protect your

eyes from infection and to aid the

healing processes. You will also be using artificial tears frequently

to keep your eyes moist and comfortable
LASIK was first introduced over 20 years ago. Since then there

have been many improvements and advancements which have

made the procedure a very popular choice for many.
